Lions Wake the Warriors of Falfurrias

The Lions of GTCA put on a spectacular display Tuesday night in the Lion’s Den at Calallen Baptist Church Gym. There were enough fireworks Tuesday night to rival any Fourth of July Celebration. There was enough electricity to rival any power plant, enough courage and strength to last a lifetime as the GTCA Lions muscled their way over the Warriors of Falfurrias with a 90 to 48 victory.

The first quarter opened with 7 out of the 10 lions quickly leaving their paw prints on the score board as Zack Rabagos scored triple deuces, John Mills with a pair of baskets, Aaron Comisky with a basket and a free throw, and Tommy Meyer going to the line to contribute 2 and a basket with a total of 23 for the quarter.

The 2nd quarter started off with the big man, Daniel Garcia, quickly scoring 4 points in the paint while Aaron Comisky was just warming up with 3 baskets and 2 from the line as he was fouled looking for a layup.  Izaac Rabagos, with a mind-bending display of pure genius and courageousness drove his 5’1”, 101lb. body in for a sacrificial layup against a wall of Warriors waiting for the inevitable foul. The Warriors collapsed on Izaac with ease as the Lions watched in wonder. Izaac lit a fire deep in the heart of the Lions with his courageous basket from the line. John Mills scored 4 points and Zack Rabagos finished with 2 points for a total of 19 for the quarter and 42 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter, the Lions, already fired up from the sacrifice of Izaac Rabagos in the 2nd, came out roaring as Aaron Comisky on his way to an all time high scoring, 20 point game contributed a remarkable 8 points. Richard Guartuche and Allen Young worked the weary Warriors as they displayed animalistic instinct, battling and clawed for every basket and turnover contributing 6 points between them. Josiah Isom stepped up to the challenge with 4 points from the outside, Daniel Garcia dropped in another consistent 4 points in the post position, and Tommy Meyer fought off the Warriors to seal 2 more points. John Mills eased in a basket and free-throw for a high of 28 for the quarter and 69 going into the 4th.

In the most exciting quarter of the game, Zackery Rabagos turned up the heat by nailing 6 points. Daniel Garcia scored a consistent 4 points with two coming from the line. Aaron Comisky closed out his high scoring game with a free throw. Josiah Isom scored a basket and supplied the only 3 pointer of the game with a deep swoosh from the right side. John Mills racked up a basket. In an unselfish display of sportsmanship Richard Guartuche drove the ball in for a layup only to fake and pass the ball to Benjamin Perez who was open at a comfortable range of 12 foot from the basket. Benjamin took the shot placing all of the Lions on the scoreboards. The Lions closed out the 4th with 20 points and a total of 90 for the game.

Lions Leave Claw Marks

The first District game of the season for the Glad Tidings Christian Academy Lions against the Warriors of Annapolis Christian Academy was an incredible game. The young Lions started the first quarter with a roar as Allen Young exploded from the tip off and caught fire by dropping 7 points, 6 of those points were within the first 2 minutes of the game. Also showing their fangs in the first quarter were John Mills with 4 points, Zack Rabagos and Daniel Garcia with deuces and Tommy Meyer with 1 point, for a total of 16 points for the first quarter as GTCA held the Warriors to 6 point.

In the second quarter, the Warriors fought back with 11 points as the Lions offense began to quiet down. Zack Rabagos was the leading scorer of the
quarter with 4 points as Tommy Meyer and Aaron Comisky held their ground and supplied 2 points each for a total of 8 for the quarter, leaving the game at 24 to 17 with the Lions out front going into the  half.

Returning from the half, the Lions and the Warriors showed signs of fatigue as both teams lacked the drive on both the offense and defense, each holding the other to 7 points. Aaron Comisky and John Mills shouldered the work in the third as John added 2 and Aaron had a lay-up and an impressive shot from
3-point land.

In the last quarter, the most exciting period of the game, the young Lions expressed their prowess as they pounced on the Warriors from the opening  whistle. John Mills was denied a lay-up as he found himself surrounded by Warriors. Keeping the ball alive, he searched for an outlet and inched closer
and closer to the baseline behind the glass. In an exciting display of agility under pressure, he put the ball up and over the back of the glass with a swish
setting the pace for the end of the game. The Lions stepped up the pressure in the fourth, and with the time ticking, this team of titans worked together to stop the Warriors. Benjamin Perez and Izaac Rabagos increased their work as they caused turnovers. Richard Guartuche took advantage of an opening and grabbed a basket in the paint. Zack Rabagos, wide open on the 3-point line had a high arching 3 that pulled the lions farther out front. As the Warriors hit foul trouble, the Lions benefited by going to the line as Daniel Garcia scored an additional point, and Josiah Isom scored 2 on the line. With the final seconds ticking away, and with the Lions leading the way, the final score was an exciting 48 to 32. The high scorers of the game were, Zack Rabagos and John Mills both with 12 points each. Congratulations to the GTCA Lions on their first District win.

Congratulations to the GTCA Varsity Boys Basketball Team

The Lions Varsity Basketball was challenged by the experienced Knight of Kingsville’s, Christian Life Academy. The Knights have dominated the Lions for the past two years and have never let a win over the Lions escape  their grasp. With a seemingly impenetrable armor of defense, and with state   championship banners lining their walls, they were the first to get on the  boards and quickly set the pace for the game. The younger and inexperienced
Lions took the first few minutes of the game to get their  young  legs, but when they did, they answered back with a no nonsense attitude followed
by an impressive show of heart. The second quarter was a genuine battle as the score teetered back and forth, each team earnestly battling each other. At the  half, the Lions knew they were in a position to be able to seize their prey and earn a big “V”. Entering into the third quarter, the Lions were in the paint, defending their lair and instrumental on the offense as they ambushed the Knights by dropping in several deuces in the paint. As the fourth quarter
opened, the Knights began to feel the strength and power of the younger, more agile Lions as their defense collapsed. Time began to take its toll on the
Knights as their six-man team began to get winded. It was a faith building game as the Lions walked out of the gym as winners, behind them a room full of championship banners within their grasp.

Lady Lions Volleyball Season Opener

The Lady Lions Volleyball season  opener against the Lady Knights of Kingsville's Christian Life Academy was a  real nail-biter. The Lady Lions took the court with 7 players while the CLA Lady nights bench was slightly deeper, and with some real powerhouses. That didn't stop the Lady Lions from roaring out onto the court in a best 3 out of 5 games. The GTCA Lady Lions, (Melody Casares, Cindy Jimenez, Heather Monk, Ayshia Puente, Victoria Rabagos, Hannah Ruiz, and Hope Vasquez),  with only a week of practice, worked to get their legs in game one, but failed to tame the knights with a score of 25-12. The Lions showed their potential power and prowess in game 2 as they stalked the Knights in an even closer game, but were still penned by the knight in a 27-25 loss, the closest game of the night. In Game 3, the real nail-biter of the night, the Lions showed their true might with a string of aces and points right from the start. Ayshia Puente and Hope Vasquez rallied the Pride of the Lions and set the pace for the game, but the Knights, once again took the lead away from the Lady Lions in the closing minutes of the game with a 25-21 victory. The Lions were excited about the outcome since they are a young team and have had very little experience or practice leading up to the Monday night game. They shared in a post game meal at the local BK and talked about their come back win next Monday night, October 3rd and October 10th in Kingsville at 4:30pm. Check Back soon for more scores and highlights. All are welcome to attend.
